July 13th DoctorfunK – Funk
DoctorfunK has been a SummerStage favorite for several years; this will be their fourth appearance! Established in1995, the band echoes the legendary passion of the famed horn band, Tower of Power and that “Bay Area Sound” setting the standard for new soul music in the Pacific Northwest. The sophisticated horn arrange-ments, powerful vocals, and well greased rhythm section deliver the deepest of grooves and smoothest of ballads, playing original songs and covering the hottest funk rock classics.
July 20th Longstride – Reggae/Ska
With influences from reggae, rock, blues, funk and surf, Longstride has emerged from Seattle’s abundant music scene with a unique and distinctively lyrical identity. Their music puts forth strong reggae and rock rhythms, real melodies, and a high-energy, crowd moving stage show. Comprised of veteran musicians, Longstride began performing in 2012 and have been packing clubs, such as the Nectar Lounge and Jazzbones, and summer festivals.
July 27th Vaudeville Etiquette – Folk Rock
Vaudeville Etiquette’s dynamic sound pushes the boundaries of psych-folk with grit, passion, and come-hither wit. The Seattle quintet fills timeless melodies with modern lyrics, heady harmonies, and a potent country-meets-classic-rock chemistry. Duo lead vocals and a wailing pedal steel dive from energetic anthem to wistful ballads. Vaudeville Etiquette was a surprise smash at SummerStage last year!
Aaron Crawford is bringing a new sound to the music scene, blending country with melodic rock. Aaron grew up with a foundation of church music and from there he formed multiple bands. He has written four independently released albums and toured throughout the Northwest and west coast. Combining high energy shows with a genuine love for his audience, Aaron is rapidly building a fan base across the country.
August 10th Heart By Heart – Classic Rock
Heart by Heart is a spin off from the band Heart, one of the Northwest’s most famous stadium rock bands. Heart by Heart is led by two of Heart’s original members, bassist Steve Fossen and drummer Mike Derosier, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 along with other members of Heart. The rest of the band includes Randy Hansen, who is well known in his own right as a Hendrix-style blues guitarist, Lizzy Daymont playing guitar and keyboard, and lead vocalist Somar Macek. Heart By Heart began playing together in 2009 and are now in high demand from Seattle WA to Washington D.C. The band members love the music from the ’70s and ’80s, and it shows in their well-crafted interpretations of the original Heart songs including “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You,” “Barracuda,” and other music from that era.
This is one that rock ‘n roll fans won’t want to miss!
August 17th Grace Love & The True Loves – Soul
“Grace Love and the True Loves is an original 9-piece soul sensation from Seattle, WA. Following in the footsteps of Stax, Motown, King and Daptone artists, but with a sound all their own, Grace Love and the True Loves are setting a course as the next hot soul and funk number ready to sweep the nation with true cross-over appeal. On vocals, Grace Love is Seattle’s shining jewel of grit, beauty and power…Backed by the True Loves, her vocals float effortlessly over kickin’ back beats, smart horns, syncopated rhythms and sweet B-3 color. It’s the hip swinging, booty shaking, heart freeing sound you crave to hear live, but rarely do.” Grace Love & The True Loves, who have played on CW11’s Band in Seattle, completed a West Coast tour, and played at Sasquatch! Music Festival at the Gorge, were recommended by a SummerStage regular- thanks, Sue!
August 24th BONUS WEEK! Stary Olsa – playing rock covers with medieval instruments (really!)
Stary Olsa, was founded in 1999 to honor the musical traditions of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The band’s usual repertoire consists of the music of medieval cities, courts, castles, knight’s epos, and old dances. So how did Stary Olsa come to play at SummerStage? They performed Metallica’s “One” for fun on Belarusian TV and something magical happened… Stary Olsa became an internet sensation! Responding to an outcry from fans (“One” has over 1.6M views), the band is recording an album of rock covers and will be touring the U.S. to promote it. Their instrumentation consists of bagpipe, lyre, psaltery, reed pipe, Jew’s-harp, ocarina, trumpets, rebec, tromba marina, lute, cister, flute, and drums, all made as exact as possible to the medieval originals. Besides its own theatrical concerts, Stary Olsa performs at medieval culture festivals, spear-runnings and folklore festivals. The band has recorded 11 albums, filmed a documentary, published books, and cooperates with museums and research centers, masters of early instruments, and many knightly clubs from Belarus and Europe. They have won the National Music Award (Belarus, 2012) and Rock Crown (Belarus, 2003). Dig out you Renaissance and Game of Thrones garb, get a turkey leg from the food truck and some ale (or beer), and have a fantastical evening with Stary Olsa on this rare SummerStage bonus track!
This project is supported, in part, by an award from 4Culture.
